WHAT IS THE HOME-BP STUDY?
Patients undergoing hemodialysis face an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes relating to high blood pressure (BP). The current standard of care is to treat elevated BP based on pre-dialysis BP readings taken at the dialysis unit. However, this may not accurately reflect what a patient’s BP is at home, potentially leading to under- or over-treatment of BP. In this study, we look at cardiovascular outcomes of hemodialysis patients treated for high BP based on home BP readings compared to pre-dialysis readings.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE STUDY?
- To test the effects of treating BP based on home BP readings
- To evaluate the correlation between pre-dialysis BP and home BP under different treatment strategies
- To assess nephrologist’s perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs about treating home BP
Our goal is to allow providers to make more informed treatment decisions to achieve the best possible outcomes for hemodialysis patients.
WHO CAN JOIN THE STUDY?
- Ages 18 years and older
- Are undergoing in-center hemodialysis at least 3 times weekly for treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
- Have been on hemodialysis for more than 3 months
- Have a life expectancy greater than 10 months
- Able to obtain own blood pressure on the upper arm
WHAT DO I DO ONCE I’VE ENROLLED?
- Meet with a study coordinator to receive training on taking home blood pressure readings
- Take blood pressure readings at home 3 days per week on non-dialysis days
- Meet with a study coordinator to check in throughout the study at some of your dialysis center visits
- Continue following your blood pressure treatment plan as prescribed to you by your physician
WHAT ARE PARTICIPANTS SAYING?
- "I like that I learned something. Knowing about my blood pressure helps me stay healthy. I use it (the monitor) to take my kid's blood pressure too!"
- “Felt study was beneficial and allowed me to develop a certain level of discipline when checking my blood pressure over a year. Blood pressure went from questionably troublesome to excellent.”
- “Instructions on how to take BP at homemade taking home BP practical and easy”
- “Study team was awesome”
