What is the study?
Kidney transplant is a valuable treatment option for people with kidney failure. Unfortunately, most patients do not ultimately receive a kidney and there are substantial inequities in access to the treatment. In order to receive a kidney, patients must establish with a local nephrologist, be referred to a transplant center, complete an evaluation process, and be selected from a national waitlist to receive a deceased donor kidney or identify a willing and able living donor. In order to better understand early steps in this process, we are conducting a retrospective study of a national group of patients with advanced kidney disease who received care in the Veterans Affairs Health Care System from 2011-2022.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE STUDY?
- Characterize the timing and likelihood of reaching each subsequent step in the kidney transplant process.
- Describe differences in clinical care for patients who are or are not engaged in the transplant process.
- Characterize patterns of care trajectories (or the sequence and duration of steps in the transplant process) and identify which groups of patients are more likely to experience different types of these trajectories.
