Bio

Dr. Bjornstad is a clinician-scientist with a track record of research potential and success. He is the PI of NIH, AHA, and JDRF-funded studies in youth and adults with type 1 (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and obesity focusing on hormonal, metabolic, molecular, and hemodynamic mechanisms underlying the development of kidney and heart disease.

Bjornstad's expertise in the area has been recognized by major research groups, including Coronary Artery Calcification in Type 1 Diabetes (CACTI) Study, Determinants of Macrovascular Disease Risk in Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, RESistance to InSulin in Type 1 ANd Type 2 diabetes (RESISTANT) Study, Canadian Study of Longevity in Type 1 Diabetes (Longevity), Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY), Teen-LABS (Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery), Preventing Early Renal Loss in Diabetes (PERL) Study, Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP) and Determinants of Diabetic Nephropathy in American Indians Study (DDN) where he has been invited to join as an investigator.

He is the Co-Chair of the Renal Working Group of TODAY. His lab is known for applying an integrative biological approach to better understand early kidney and heart disease. They are experts in iohexol and p-aminohippurate clearance to quantify glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow, and functional MRI and PET imaging to determine renal and cardiac function.
