What is the Study?
In type 1 diabetes, kidney disease has traditionally been thought of a process primarily involving glomeruli. Recent research suggests that damage to kidney tubules also plays a key role in chronic kidney disease.
What are the goals of the study?
This project examines blood and urine biomarkers of kidney tubular function and damage in two landmark clinical trials of type 1 diabetes. By relating these biomarkers to kidney histopathology, examining their changes over time, and examining why they change over time, the study aims to find new ways to detect and monitor kidney disease early in its course.
