WHAT IS THE KIND-HF STUDY?

KIND-HF is a prospective study of 400 patients admitted with acute decompensated heart failure at a UW hospital. The study will compare traditional and novel measures of kidney function and the response to treatment for acute decompensated heart failure while in the hospital and post-discharge.

Acute decompensated heart failure is a major cause of hospitalization and poor clinical outcomes in the U.S. population. Kidney function is an important determinant of management and prognosis in patients with acute decompensated heart failure, but current clinical measures of kidney function are inadequate for use in these patients.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE STUDY?

The goal of this study is to identify novel kidney measures that may be used to guide therapy and determine prognosis in patients with acute decompensated heart failure.

  • Understand how the kidneys are affected by heart failure in the short and long-term
  • Understand how the kidneys respond to treatments for heart failure

WHO CAN JOIN THE STUDY?

This study has completed enrollment & is in a follow-up phase.

Patients admitted to University of Washington hospitals (UW-Montlake, HMC, & UW-NWH) with Acute Decompensated Heart Failure.

WHAT DO I DO ONCE I’VE ENROLLED?

There are inpatient study visits at 4-time points and outpatient study visits at 3-time points for up to 14 months. We collect blood, urine & surveys in this time period. We complete echos at first admission and at the end of the study.

WHAT ARE PARTICIPANTS SAYING?

Many subjects have appreciated the extra attention they get as a study subjects. They are excited to "do their part" and give back to research.
