Biography

Mr. Conway is Chair of Policy & Global Affairs, and Immediate Past President, of the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP), the nation’s largest kidney patient organization. He has managed kidney disease for forty-two years, including nearly three on home dialysis and, for the past twenty-five with a kidney transplant. He is Chair of the FDA’s Patient Engagement Advisory Committee and the Co-Chair of the Global Summit on Kidney Disease Innovations, an AAKP partnership with George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. As an advocate for the utilization of patient insight data in policy and innovation, he has provided related perspectives to the UN, EU, WHO, and PAHO. He has served in posts under four US presidents and three governors, in support of five presidential transitions, and his awards include the Department of Homeland Security’s Silver Medal for exceptionally meritorious service to America. In 2022, he was named to the Presidential Rank Review Board to evaluate federal agency executives for presidential and White House recognition. His previous federal roles include Chief of Staff of the Department of Labor; Chief of Staff of the Office of Personnel Management; Agency Chief of Staff, DHS; and Special Assistant, White House ONDCP. In Virginia, he served as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources. He is a recipient of both the ASN and AAKP President’s Medal for advocacy and serves on the KHI Board, USRDS Contract Board, Nephrology Specialty Board of ABIM, External Expert Panel for the NIH/NIDDK KPMP and as a Patient Voice Editor for CJASN.
