“Dr. Jonathan Himmelfarb is the 2021 Belding Scribner Award Recipient
A key figure in both near and longer-term kidney research breakthroughs, the American Society of Nephrology has awarded Dr. Jonathan Himmelfarb the Belding Scribner Award for his lifetime of achievement. Dr. Himmelfarb directs the Kidney Research Institute and co-directs the Center for Dialysis Innovation (CDI), another research collaboration between Northwest Kidney Centers and UW Medicine. He also serves as the co-Director of the NIH-funded, NIDDK Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), which aims to ethically obtain and evaluate human kidney biopsies from participants with AKI or CKD, create a kidney tissue atlas, define disease subgroups, and identify critical cells, pathways and targets for novel therapies.
Recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise in dialysis, Dr. Himmelfarb has made many contributions to research and patient care. His research interests involve metabolic complications of kidney disease. He has also been involved in creating statewide, community-based research into healthcare disparities related to chronic kidney disease. The total patient experience is his primary concern. As a clinician, Dr. Himmelfarb provides care that is personal, and patient centered.
